Leaf borders and scroll motifs were used extensively in the arts and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. During the Italianate Victorian Period of Lighting (circa 1860 - 1885) the acanthus leaves were carved out of a flat surface by using a sharpened spoon. Today this splendid handcrafted feature adds elegance and beauty to any lantern.
